Retrenching Helpfully, and Developing Resilience in the Face of Adversity: A Postivie Change Process

Session 1: Retrenching Helpfully by Andrew Bramley

Employers generally follow the law when it comes to retrenchment, indeed our law is very regulated and there are many good legal practitioners to support the process.
Employers are also good at providing counselling to individuals as part of the process.

The challenge is helping individuals who are losing their jobs, through no fault of their own, to redefine what they can and want to do now, how to job hunt without relying exclusively on the often low return of CV’s, agencies, newspapers or the internet and how to manage themselves through the process of immense turmoil.

One of the real challenges is to do so without losing hope. It takes immense energy at a time when this may be at an all time low.

Andrew Bramley heads a consulting business that specialises in helping those who are being retrenched to take charge of themselves and their search for work when faced with job loss.

Session 2:   Developing Resillience in the Face of Adversity: A Positive Change Proess by Dr Willie Visser

In today’s economic environment some companies find it necessary to undertake a transformation process in order to stay competitive. To achieve its economic goals it might become necessary for many companies to go through a restructuring process. Unfortunately, many of these improvement efforts leave unintended consequences in their wake. Some of the well-known consequences of corporate restructuring and downsizing are that the implicit psychological contract between the employees and the employer are damaged which results in a decline of employee morale and trust, the quality and productivity of employee output often decline, the best talent of the organisation decides to leave the organisation, there is an increase in employee cynicism and change fatigue as well as an increase in the levels  levels of stress and burnout as a result of the increase in job insecurity, increase in work load, ambiguity and a general sense of loss of control.

Follow the implementation of a real life case study where the management of a company that went through a restructuring process, decided to to go through a corporate revitalisation process with the surviving employees making use of positive change processes to reduce negative affect, to develop individual and corporate resilience, to reduce cynicism, stress and burnout and to increase levels of trust and engagement as well as to revitalise and re-energise the organisation.

The following topics will be covered:

  • The development of a general model of organisational resilience
  • The measurement of the model and the sharing of results
  • The application and use of the model in the organisation to guide management decisions on the road to recovery
  • The selection and implementation of a broad range of positive organisational interventions
