(1) Scope of Practice
and
(2) Ethics and Assessments: Dealing with day-to-day ethical challenges
1) Scope of Practice
Fred Guest – Industrial Psychologist
How do you describe your field of work to non-Industrial Psychologists?
What does an Industrial Psychologist actually do? Can it really be called psychology”?
The Scope of Practice Survey conducted during November 2009 provided some interesting insights to this question – 240 individuals completed the survey; nearly 48% of respondents spend less than 50% of their time doing actual Industrial Psychology work. Why would respondents describe CPD as one of the most critical factors for success in the profession, yet rate a competency like Learning and Researching as only moderately important for success? Are we that driven by Board regulation?
To understand these and other areas better, this regional event will be an opportunity to get a copy of the survey report and share your thoughts on the content of the survey. We want to workshop some of the themes from the survey and, using a focus group format, provide some real life examples of the type of work we do.
2) Ethics and Assessments: Dealing with day-to-day ethical challenges
Anne Buckett and Madia Levin – Industrial Psychologists
This workshop aims to explore some of the most common ethical challenges that we face in the assessment arena and looks at ways to address these appropriately.
Every day, as Industrial Psychologists, we are faced with many ethical challenges in the workplace and often the lines client satisfaction, business needs, good practice and ethical conduct become blurred. By being prepared, Industrial Psychologists can endorse the fact that good ethical practice is good professional practice.
This workshop will incorporate:
- A brief theoretical overview of assessments in South Africa, thereby establishing a solid frame of reference
- An overview of past ethical challenges in assessments versus future ethical challenges
- A brief literature review of the key challenges facing assessment practices.
(Inputs and feedback provided by the delegates will form the basis of a research project focusing on ethics in assessment.)
