The role of I/O Psychologists as organisational architects: An OD Perspective

26 February 2014, Liberty Centre

Braamfontein, Johannesburg

There are few CEO's and HR Executives that do not utter the words “people are at the heart of our business”. No one in their right mind can contest the truth of this statement especially when looking at all the research and case studies that abound on building sustainable organisations and how businesses will compete in the future.

A fundamental question does, however, need to be asked. Do we really understand what this means and implies? Does it mean that we create people centric organisations? And so build organisations around our people? Does it mean we build organisations of people that keep themselves busy with whatever needs to be done? Trusting their ability to do the right thing at least most of the time?

Or does putting people at the heart of our business imply something else? Another view is that when putting people at the heart of our business implies putting work or better even, the result of work and investment in related organisational capability at the heart of our business. In other words, understanding the result of work the business needs to get done leads onto what kind of people will do this the best and how this will influence the way we pay people, how we develop them and in essence the other opportunities they get exposed to.

This session will among other things explore the role of I/O Psychologists in people practices within the organisation as well as the need for businesses to manage people and productivity to the maximum benefit of the business within the context of what motivates people to excel.

The role of I/O Psychologists as organisational architects: An OD Perspective

About your presenters:

Otto Pretorius, an established executive business consultant and director of QBIT Group (Pty) Ltd, qualified as a psychologist in 1995 at the Buffalo State University, USA. Otto’s diverse background as founding member of Caritas (an international, community based organization), researcher of USAID (evaluating literacy levels in Africa), senior lecturer in Information Systems and later the founder of the Institute for Creative Thinking (University of Pretoria) as well as a brief period as practicing psychologist, cultivated his broad skills base, especially in spearheading some ground-breaking work on the role of people in technology. As managing director of Mind Crew, senior business consultant of Ernst & Young and director at QBIT, he has nurtured his ability to focus on the dynamic interface between people, business processes and technology from an operational and strategic perspective.

Over the past twelve years he has focused on the Human Capital environment and its potential to become a strategic business partner as facilitated through technology and OD. This has led him to a number of interim executive management positions in South Africa as HR executive.  His clients include amongst others Old Mutual, Medscheme, First National Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, Momentum, University of the Western Cape, ArcelorMittal, Ekurhuleni Municipality, National Department of Health and others.

Herman Roythorne-Jacobs has experience in the entire spectrum of human resources and can therefore be seen as HR Practitioner (OD). However, due to his specialised interest in human capacity development, he specialises in strategic human resource development, career and performance management. He was also engaged in specialised services such as executive coaching, facilitating selection and interviewing skills workshops, career decision workshops and coaching and mentoring process facilitation. At present, Herman is the Competency and Assessment Manager of QBIT Group.

Lize Kloppers has been involved in various assessment and research projects within the automotive, manufacturing and mining industries. She was appointed in the capacity of Talent Management Specialist at Exxaro Resources, where her work focused on the development of senior organisational personnel (2007/8). As consultant for Thomas International/ACT she gained valuable experience and exposure to various pharmaceutical companies, conducting assessments and related team development initiatives for Pfizer and Abbott Laboratories (2003-7). In her capacity as researcher, (1995-2000) Lize gained exposure to BMW’s mystery shopper program and various related consumer insight studies in this industry.

WHY should you attend? This session will explore one of the roles I/O Psychologists are challenged to start assuming in organisational contexts. The session will afford delegates the opportunity to engage on the topic of the interaction between people, business process and technology, from an organisational development perspective.  Members will also receive CPD points when attending this workshop.
