SIOPSA INVITATION

Please join the Western Cape branch on Thursday 04 April 2013 for a fun-filled evening NOT to be missed!

Professional Networking: Unlocking the loom and its cognitive neuroscience.

>>This event is accredited for 2 CPD points<<

ABOUT THIS EVENT:

Due to requests, we have formulated an evening focussing on professional social networking. As many organisational/industrial psychologists in the Western Cape are operating in “silos”, this is the perfect opportunity to get to network on a professional level.

The extraordinary adventurer, Sonja Kruse, shares how story-telling can be used as a tool to network. Our well-known Dr Etienne van der Walt, neurologist and leader in the field of brain science to enhance potential, focuses on what happens in “the universe between your ears” when we network.

Apart from the excellent guest speakers, this evening is specially designed so that you get the opportunity to network. Remember to bring personal business cards to this event!

SPEAKERS:

Guest Speaker 1: Sonja Kruse – “The Weave”

This presentation aims to take us on a journey where we open our hearts and minds to ways of approaching people in story-mode. We will take a road less travelled as we listen to some of the tales from the UBUNTU girl journey. The destination is unknown, so be warned! We’ll explore what it is that we bring with us, in our pursuit of connecting with others. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll find that this is a key that unlocks a loom for network creation

Sonja Kruse, a co-founder of the South African non-profit organisation ‘The UBUNTU effect’, columnist, international presenter and speaker and 2011 Feathers Award finalist, is an extraordinary woman, blessed with a well developed sense of adventure and enormous faith in humanity. She recently completed a year-long solo trip around South-Africa on foot and by thumb. Setting out with a 33lt backpack, a camera and a R100 with an open heart and an open mind she hitch hiked and walked for 351 days, experiencing the generosity of 150 families, from 16 cultures, throughout 114 towns. She did this without a back up team, tent or bank cards and without pre-planning the route. Sonja wanted to collect the goodwill stories that are often omitted from our newspaper headlines and as a result of this experience is busy writing a book about her Ubuntu journey. Her wish is that it will help us build social bridges and equip the next generation with the tools to write the stories we want for our future. Sonja has presented the Ubuntu story in Mexico, Germany and Italy. Her story has also been told on ‘Carte Blanche’ and SABC 3’s ‘Women- Leap of Faith’.

Guest Speaker 2:Dr Etienne Van Der Walt– “ Brain Performance of the Professional Networker”

All performance is brain performance. Our brains are continuously performing for us to safely guide us through life. It does this in simple but very complex manner. And with latest progress in cognitive neuroscience we are now able to catch a glimpse of how our brains perform for us. In this talk we will explore the insights of brain performance that enrich our understanding of networking in the business world. We can and should view ourselves as corporate athletes and enhance our function through understanding of the major themes that underpin human performance, the mechanisms that drive brain performance and how to enhance and optimise our brain function in order to fully engage in the corporate world.

Dr Etienne van der Walt (BSc, BMedSc, MBChB, MMed (neurology), is an accomplished neurologist, head of cognitive neuroscience at Neurozone, and authority in early childhood brain development. Etienne’s 14-year career as a clinical neurologist means he has a deep understanding of the anatomy, biology, and physiology of the brain and the human nervous system. In more recent years, his professional and personal fascination with the remarkable discoveries coming from the various brain sciences has led him to believe in the vast potential of this new knowledge to enhance human capacity. The realization of this vision is the founding of Cape Town based Neurozone™, a neuroscience business dedicated to the application of brain science to enhance human capacity. Also the founder of AmazingBrainz™, a non-profit dedicated to the design of programs for the brain stimulation of young, developing children – especially in disadvantaged communities. Etienne worked as a neurologist in South Africa, the UK, and the Netherlands, currently teaches neuroscience to medical students at the University of Stellenbosch, and speaks to diverse audiences of professionals, educators, and parents about the amazing human brain.
