SIOPSA hosted a 2-hour interactive forum exploring crucial workplace dynamics and the pivotal role of the IOP as workplace counsellors. Here’s a recap of the key takeaways.
Dr Ruwayne Kock, President of SIOPSA, highlighted the mental health crisis in South African workplaces. He urged HR and IOPs to craft effective counselling strategies for employee well-being.
Sylvia Baloyi, our keynote speaker, emphasised the strategic role of IOPs in the workplace. They serve as valuable first responders, providing practices such as counselling and crisis advising to support organisations.
Dr Andrew Johnson’s TED Talk urged South African employers to prioritise mental health and rethink their approach to addressing critical issues, including more optimal use of IOPs, already in organisations, as essential counselling resources.
Lungile Langa believes that IOPs and HR professionals should work together to tackle workplace challenges, including addressing the stigma around mental health in black communities. During a fireside chat with Sane Ngidi, Lungile suggested that workplace counselling services provided by IOPs can offer a safe environment for employees to seek resolution and move forward.
Dr Sane Ngidi, the master of ceremony, hosted the panel discussion and featured all the speakers, offering diverse perspectives on the intersection of HR and IOPs.
Dr Ruwayne Kock’s closing remarks highlighted the pivotal role of IOPs as first responders to mental health concerns through workplace counselling. SIOPSA’s advocacy for IOPs in the workplace and the importance of developing IOPs’ capabilities for a seat at the boardroom table was underscored.
