Mandela Day Preoccupations: A systems psychodynamic exploration

A Virtual Listening Post

18 July 2022 (14:30 – 17:00  SAST)

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Mr Mandela (1918 – 2013)

Mandela Day is celebrated on 18 July every year to give thanks for his life, his leadership and his devotion to humanity and to humanitarian causes. As part of IGSPO’s contribution to Mandela Day celebration, we call on you to participate in this Listening post to contribute 67 minutes by elucidating our preoccupations as communities in South Africa and across the world are affected by many issues, including the impact of  Covid-19.

Systems psychodynamics is a consultancy stance that studies systemic behaviour ‘above and below the surface’ of consciousness. This stance allows OD consultants to be curious, to think about, ask questions and hypothesise about the manifesting conscious rational behaviour, and then to investigate how that relates to the unconscious irrational behaviours in society, organisations and institutions. This includes the system’s manifesting anxiety and its defences, how the system frames its primary task versus operating off-task or anti-task, how leadership takes up its role and how followership responds to leadership, how different kinds of boundaries are managed, how parts of the system authorise and de-authorise themselves and others, and how the systemic identity can be understood and described as we elucidate our thoughts, feelings, preoccupations (conscious and unconscious) in an effort to contribute 67 minutes for Mandela day.

We invite you as a system psychodynamically informed coach, consultant or researcher to a Virtual Listening Post in South Africa. The listening post serves as a container for our thoughts, feelings, preoccupations and unconscious dynamics in our different contexts marked by ongoing tumultuous change,  including the impact of  Covid-19.

The Primary Task of the listening post is to: Explore thoughts, feelings, preoccupations, conscious and unconscious,  as these operate nationally and globally, as part of our contribution of 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

WHY should you attend?

Participants will reflect on the applicability of systems psychodynamic in their organisations, institutions and society in relation to current every day issues, including the pandemic. Systems Psychodynamics allows the IOP, OD, HR practitioner and emerging psychologists to explore the unconscious, below the surface dynamics as well as the manifesting anxiety and its individual, group, social and systems domain defences. This allows participants to access another lens through which to explore and understand the dynamics in society as a result of current every day issues within a tumultuous context. You will also be exposed to the Listening Post as a method in the exploration of various phenomena in different contexts.

 Method:

Listening Posts are reflective spaces in which to take a ‘snapshot’ of a system (e.g. organisation, institution and society) at this particular moment of our pre-occupation as part of Mandela day.  They explore the idea that a small group, when studying the behaviour of the wider social system will unconsciously express some of its characteristics and that these are discernible from the themes and patterns emerging from the conversation.

The event will have a research component – once you have registered more information will be communicated
