TOPIC

  • How to define ‘ethics’.
  • How ethics relates to the law.
  • What the most common sources of ethical standards are.
  • An overview of the big three normative ethical theories (i.e., utilitarianism, deontology and virtue theory).
  • Learn about ethics decision-making frameworks.
  • Learn about social forces that can override ethical thinking such as:
    • Role conformity and the ‘Lucifer Effect’ developed by Phillip Zimbardo
    • Obedience to Authority as developed by Stanley Milgram
    • Group Apathy as developed by Bibb Latane and John Darley
    • Group Conformity as developed by Solomon Asch.
  • How to resist and identify social forces using videos that cover each social experiment.

GUEST SPEAKER: DR PAUL VORSTER

Paul is a founding member of the World Congress of Personality and is a member of the International Test Commission (ITC). Locally, he is a member of the Psychometric Assessment in Industry (PAI) Community
Paul facilitated the professional ethics offering at JvR Psychometrics where he trained psychologists and psychometrists on professional ethics. Additionally, he consulted with numerous audit firms in South Africa on their professional ethics training programmes and taught ethics at the University of Pretoria to 3rd-year Audit and Accounting students. His areas of speciality include: identifying toxic leaders and the contextual factors that let them thrive in organisations, group conformity and apathy, and the effect of social forces on ethical decision-making.
He is currently working on a survey and behavioural research at The Ethics Institute. His areas of speciality include profiling destructive leadership, the impact of social forces on individual moral decision-making, and the assessment of ethical culture and behavioural risk in organisations.
