Description

Trauma management and crisis counselling in Industrial Psychology: An introductory course

CPD: 12 General CPDs

PSB002/ASP/003/2023/36a

PSB002/ASP/003/2023/36b

Background:

The HPCSA Professional Board for Psychology have identified in the industrial psychology Board Exam that competence in workplace counselling was not adequately displayed. This included a lack of application of theory in practice, ethical reasoning driven by compliance and not critical application, under-developed ability to diagnose work psychopathology, and understanding the role of the psychologist in the broader society – understanding our social role.

This finding was corroborated through interviews with industrial psychologists (Du Plessis & Thomas, 2021), indicating that many industrial psychologists did not receive training in counselling during their studies, and felt ill-equipped to counsel employees in the workplace.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for crisis counselling and trauma management in the workplace (Graupner, 2021). The industrial psychologist, as psychologist in the workplace, is well-placed to provide counselling to employees and clients.

Why should you attend:

The introductory course in crisis and trauma counselling for industrial psychologists aims to equip industrial psychologists with basic skills in counselling, specifically trauma and crisis counselling. During this two-day workshop the attendees will receive knowledge of workplace psychopathology and maladjustment; and to address workplace trauma at an individual, group and organisational level. The theories, models and approaches to trauma and crisis management will be discussed. A practical basic trauma counselling model will be provided, and the attendees will be allowed time to practice these skills by using case studies and role plays.
