Understanding Generations in the Workplace – an Introduction

with Adriaan Adams facilitated by SIOPSA Chairperson Francois de Wet (Industrial PsychologistPS 0122505)

Background of topic:

The work environment is comprised of multiple layers that distinguish one individual from the next. Ranging from hierarchical structures reminiscent of traditional job titles, demographic inclusivity, diversity of thought, and various other categories, we have found more and more ways to differentiate between our employees. Some of these differentiators are bound within the architecture specifically created for the way of work. Other differentiators are bound within social constructions, the likes of which subtly adjust our day-to-day interactions at a subliminal level of influence. How does the baby-boomer respond to a manager half his or her age? How does the intern relate to the supervisor who has been in the industry for over twenty years? How are the decisions made by the less-experienced but tech-savvy youth, taken as seriously as the highly-experienced but more conventional employees and managers? And above all, what does this say about the kind of culture we are likely to step into in the workplace?

Join us for an interactive presentation where many of these questions will be raised, with the intention to focus on creating a solid understanding to why culture matters and how to define and influence culture in order to create the desired outcomes for maximum effectiveness. The focus will be on case studies and theoretical examples of how to create a healthy Multi-Generational work environment and reflecting on the various sub-cultures that impact our response to change and generational influences.

Facilitator: Adriaan Adams

Adriaan Adams is the founder of Generation Index and the lead creator of the Generational Engagement Index Tool. Adriaan is passionate about people and the creation of optimal corporate culture. He spent twenty years travelling to numerous countries to interact with various businesses and NPOs. These interactions inform his talks in which he addresses both the disconnect between generations in the workplace and the loss of knowledge and skills transfer that takes place due to lack of engagement between older and younger generations.

With 67% of the population in Africa under the age of 25, Adriaan believes that by fostering healthy multi-generational work environments, a platform will be created for the passion of the young to connect with the wisdom of the old, and collectively unleash an opportunity for Africa to reach its full potential.
