Professor Deon Meiring
It is with great sadness that SIOPSA announces the sudden passing of Professor Deon Meiring on Friday 4 October 2019. Prof Deon was a kind soul with a generous demeanour, impacting our profession through knowledge contribution, supervision, leadership and endless support and contributions to the society.
Prof Deon Meiring (1967) held a PhD Degree in Cross-Cultural Psychology from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He was an Associate Professor at the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Economic Management Sciences, University of Pretoria, where he was the Industrial Psychology master’s programme coordinator as well as the Internship program coordinator. In 2007 he was appointed Assistant Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Industrial Psychology at Stellenbosch University, a position he held until 2013. Just this past week, he received another accolade and was recognised as a C1 NRF rated researcher. Prof Meiring’s research examines Industrial Psychology and Cross-Cultural Psychology in the workplace, with a focus on personnel psychology and assessment practice in multicultural settings. His research deals with workplace personality measurement, assessment centres, situational judgment testing, cross-cultural assessment, personnel selection, applied cross-cultural methodology and green behaviour. Prof Deon will forever be recognised for his work in Cross-Cultural Psychology and particularly the development of the South African Personality Inventory. Before joining the University of Pretoria, he practised as a Senior Industrial Psychologist in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 19 years (1991–2010), where he focused on specialised selection and assessment practices. In 2010 he received an honorary membership from the South African Assessment Centre Study Group (ASCG) for invaluable contribution to the field of Assessment Centres in South Africa and in 2016 he was awarded the Presidential award from the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOPSA) for significant contribution to Industrial and Organisational Psychology in South Africa.
Prof Deon Meiring will be sadly missed by the SIOPSA community and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, Ilse and his daughters, Chloe and Kylie as well as his colleagues.
