Interest Group for People Assessment in Industry (IGPAI)

Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa

Interest Group Overview

People Assessments in Industry (PAI) was established in 1998 to proactively engage various stakeholders interested in psychological assessment in South Africa. PAI has functioned as an interest group of the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology in South Africa since 2005.

The group’s activities include promoting best practise assessment methodologies in the workplace, with the primary aim being to be generally recognised as a leading voice in the continuing promotion of fair assessment in the workplace to which people will automatically refer for assessment expertise and knowledge.

Which field of psychology does the interest group target?

PAI targets Industrial/Organisational/Research Psychology and Psychometrics but also has a vested interest in Clinical and Educational Psychology as it pertains to the utilisation of Assessments.

The purpose of PAI is to ensure psychometric assessments and testing exists in the South African organisational context as a value-adding ethical and fair practice.

Recent Achievements

Between 2018 and 2020, PAI was instrumental in the establishment of Assessment Standards South Africa (ASSA). ASSA comprises representatives from the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOPSA) and its interest group People Assessments in Industry (PAI), the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA), Association of Test Publishers (ATP) and the International Test Commission (ITC).

With the HPCSA now focusing on Test Classification, ASSA was established as an independent non-regulatory external assessments evaluation ‘body’ with a robust, best practice, and technology-enabled process that can be used to review and certify people assessment instruments and tests.  ASSA is also focused on certifying the broader spectrum of instruments that are used in South Africa and is not limited to psychological tests only. The core purpose of Assessment Standards South Africa (ASSA) is thus to review the quality of tests that are available for use in South Africa.   Visit the ASSA website here: www.assa.co.za

In 2020, in collaboration with the South Africa Board for People Practises (SABPP), PAI released a thought leadership fact sheet on the Changing Talent Assessment Landscape.

In 2020, PAI also released a survey to obtain an understanding of the current assessment landscape in South Africa. The survey covered areas to understand how practitioners are managing Covid-19 and to also obtain an understanding of the legislative knowledge of Assessment practitioners and possible gaps. Furthermore, the survey also sought to obtain the views of Psychometrists as it pertains to their current profession, use of assessments, and their professional needs in the South African environment and to identify areas that PAI can add value to the profession. The results of the survey were presented to the public by way of a thought leadership piece and webinar in early 2021.

In early 2023, PAI released a thought leadership piece on Governance in securing and Protection of Assessment Information. During June, PAI will host a webinar with a variety of Test Providers to discuss the document and share best practices on the securing of assessment information and the management of proctored testing.

PAI is also currently busy with a variety of initiatives that include a focus on Psychometric Interns and their requirements, best practice usage of Assessments in industry, and an overview of the impact of technology on the South African Assessment Space.
